User experience, or UX (user experience), refers to the overall impression a person forms while interacting with a product, service, or system.
The concept covers all the feelings, perceptions, attitudes, and reactions a user has before, during, and after use.
User experience isn’t a single moment but a continuum that starts the first time someone hears about the product.
It ranges from first impressions to long-term relationships with the product and even recommending it to others.
The term was popularized by cognitive scientist Don Norman in the 1990s while he was working at Apple.
Norman wanted a word that captured all aspects of the interaction between people and systems — not just the interface or usability, but also emotions, context, and expectations.
The ISO 9241-210 standard defines user experience as follows:
"A person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use or anticipated use of a product, system or service."

In short: the UX designer makes sure the product works logically and solves the user’s problem, while the UI designer makes sure the product looks appealing and is pleasant to use. The best results come when both disciplines work hand in hand.

User experience isn’t limited to digital environments. It appears in many different forms and contexts:
An experience can be positive, negative or neutral. It’s shaped by the user’s expectations, the context, past experiences, mood and even cultural background. The same product can create very different experiences for different users.
UX design is an iterative process that typically follows these stages:
1. Research
Everything starts with understanding the users. In this phase you gather information about the target group—their needs, pain points and behavior patterns. Common methods include interviews, surveys, observation and competitor analysis.
2. Define
Based on the research findings, you define user personas, user stories and the core problems the product must solve. This phase creates a clear picture of who you’re designing for and why.
3. Ideate
Ideation is the creative phase where you explore as many solution options as possible for the identified problems. Tools include brainstorming, mind maps and sketching.
4. Prototype
Ideas are turned into tangible prototypes, which can range from simple paper mockups to interactive digital prototypes. The goal is to test ideas quickly and cheaply.
5. Test
Prototypes are tested with real users. Testing reveals problem areas, collects feedback and ensures the proposed solution actually works from the users’ perspective.
6. Implement & Iterate
The tested solution is implemented and launched. The process doesn’t end there — the user experience is monitored and continuously improved based on new insights and feedback.
UX research is split into two main categories: qualitative and quantitative. You need both to get a full picture.
