User experience, or UX (user experience), refers to the overall experience a user forms when interacting with a product, service, or system.
The concept encompasses all the feelings, perceptions, attitudes, and reactions that arise for the user before, during, and after use.
User experience is not a single moment but a continuum that begins from the first time the user hears about the product.
It extends from the first impression all the way to a long-term usage relationship and potential recommendation.
The concept was popularized by cognitive scientist Don Norman in the 1990s while working at Apple.
Norman wanted a term that covers all dimensions of the interaction between a human and a system – not just the user interface or usability, but also emotions, context, and expectations.
The ISO 9241-210 standard defines user experience as follows:
“A person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use or anticipated use of a product, system, or service.”

UX design is an iterative process that typically progresses through the following stages:
1. Research
Everything starts with understanding the users. In this phase, information is gathered about the target audience, their needs, pain points, and behavior patterns. Methods used include interviews, surveys, observation, and competitor analysis.
2. Define
Based on the research results, user personas, user stories, and the key problems that the product must solve are defined. In this phase, a clear picture is created of who is being designed for and why.
3. Ideate
Ideation is a creative phase where as many solution options as possible are sought for the identified problems. Tools used include, for example, brainstorming, mind maps, and sketching.
4. Prototype
Concrete prototypes are built from the ideas, which can be simple paper models or interactive digital prototypes. The purpose is to test ideas quickly and cost-effectively.
5. Test
Prototypes are tested with real users. Testing helps identify problem areas, gather feedback, and ensure that the planned solution truly works from the users’ perspective.
6. Implement & Iterate
The tested solution is implemented and published. However, the process does not end here – the user experience is monitored and continuously developed based on new observations and feedback.
UX research is divided into two main categories: qualitative and quantitative research. Both are needed to achieve a comprehensive understanding.
