What does Google think about AI-generated content?

In April 2025 Google updated its guidance on how AI-generated content is classified

Going forward, AI-generated content may receive the lowest possible quality rating.

That doesn’t mean all AI-generated content is low quality.

In this article I’ll go through how Google distinguishes between high- and low-quality content.

Create an article on the topic (Search Engine Land)

Definition of low-quality content

Examples of low-quality content
  • AI-generated content that provides no value to the reader
  • Mass volumes of AI-generated pages published without editing or original commentary
  • Summarizing or rewriting other sites’ content using AI
  • Content that closely resembles Wikipedia or other well-known encyclopedias
  • Sites whose content makes no sense but contain specific keywords

Creating these types of content can result in removal from search results.

Definition of a low-quality site

Examples of spammy sites
  • If you show different content to search engines than to users. For example, showing travel tips to Google but ads for medicine to people.
  • If you add words visible only to search engines but not to users. For example, hiding words by matching them to the background color.
  • If you operate multiple sites with very similar domain names. For example vaatteetnetista.fi, vaatteetverkosta.fi, vaatteitanetista.fi, etc.
  • If you run several sites whose domains redirect to different cities. For example Kattoremonttitampere.fi, kattoremonttihelsinki.fi, etc.
  • Exploiting an expired domain. For example, buying an expired preschool domain and filling it with casino ads.

Example of high-quality AI-generated content

In 2022 I used AI to create an article called "office Christmas party ideas"

The article was almost entirely produced with AI, yet it performs very well on Google.

Why? Because:

  • The content provides real value to users. Actual people read the article and share it on social media.
  • The content was read and edited by a human before publication.
