What does Google think about AI-generated content?

Google updated its guidelines on the classification of AI-generated content in April 2025

Going forward, AI-generated content may receive the lowest possible quality rating.

However, not all AI-generated content is low quality.

In this article, I go through how Google interprets good and low-quality content.

Create an article on the topic (Search Engine Land)

Definition of low-quality content

Examples of low-quality content
  • AI-generated content that provides no value to the reader
  • AI-generated massive amounts of pages without editing or original commentary
  • Summarizing or rewriting content from other websites using AI
  • Content that closely resembles Wikipedia or the content of other well-known encyclopedias
  • Websites whose content makes no sense but contains certain keywords

Creating these types of content can lead to the site being removed from search results.

Definition of a low-quality site

Examples of a spam site
  • If you show different content to search engines than to humans. For example, you show travel tips to Google, but pharmaceutical ads to people.
  • You add words to the page that are only visible to search engines but not to people. For example, by hiding words in the background color.
  • You have multiple different sites with very similar URL addresses. For example vaatteetnetista.fi, vaatteetverkosta.fi, vaatteitanetista.fi etc.
  • You have multiple sites whose domains direct to different cities. For example Kattoremonttitampere.fi, kattoremonttihelsinki.fi etc.
  • Exploiting an expired domain. For example, if you buy an expired domain of a daycare center and put casino ads on the site.

Example of high-quality content produced with AI

I created the 2022 article “pikkujouluideoita työporukalle” with AI

The article is almost entirely created with AI, but it ranks very well in Google.

Why? Because:

  • The content brings added value to users. Real people read the article and share it on social media.
  • The content has been read and edited by a human before publishing.
