What is Page and Domain Authority

Page Authority or PA and Domain Authority or DA, are 0-100 point rating scales developed by MOZ, which aim to calculate the quality of a site’s links.

They are based on MOZ’s Mozscape Web Index, which consists of the number of links, MozRank, and MozTrust. In a nutshell, Page and Domain Authority calculate a site’s trustworthiness in the eyes of search engines by evaluating the number and quality of sites linking to it.

How do Page and Domain Authority differ from each other?

Page Authority calculates the link value of a single page, while Domain Authority calculates the combined link value of the entire site.

Domain Authority is therefore like the sum of all the site’s PA values.

A high PA score means that a specific subpage has many strong links.

A high DA score means that the entire site has many strong links.

What is MozRank?

MozRank calculates how popular a link is. The more people who have shared the same link, the more popular it is considered.

A link’s popularity can be increased by sharing links from one website to another. Here, quality replaces quantity.

A link from a popular site like Iltalehti.fi or Helsingin Sanomat is hundreds of times more valuable than one from a blog that deals with peeling potatoes.

The link should also come from a site that deals with the same subject area.

MozRank is calculated on a scale of 0-10. The most common score for a link worldwide is 3.

What is MozTrust?

MozTrust is a global link reliability scale developed by MOZ.

It is similar to MozRank, but instead of calculating a link’s popularity, MozTrust measures its trustworthiness, i.e. whether the link comes from a reliable source or is spam.

A site that ranks at the top of search results in its own field can be considered reliable.

Where can I see my site’s Page and Domain Authority?

You can download the free MozBar extension for Chrome or Firefox, which shows the PA and DA scores for all websites in the world, along with related background information.

How can Page and Domain Authority be utilized in search engine optimization?

PA and DA scores can be used to evaluate the impact of a site’s backlinks on its visibility in search results.

However, these scores alone do not indicate the exact position a link will appear in search results. In addition to links, ranking is also affected by the site’s internal search engine optimization, i.e., how well the page content and description match the search query.

Example search “kukkakauppa helsinki”

Why doesn’t Kaivokukka.fi appear in the 1st position in search results even though its PA and DA scores are higher than, for example, Kampinkukka.fi? Because Kaivokukka’s site is poorly search engine optimized.

Compare Kaivokukka’s search engine listing to the others.

  1. The title is too long, it gets cut off and doesn’t match the search well.
  2. The meta description is too short and doesn’t include the search term.

There are also issues with Kaivokukka’s website

  1. The page content is too short
  2. The page content doesn’t match the search term well enough.

However, with small edits, Kaivokukka could still reach at least a couple of positions higher if desired.

Summary and recap

Use PA and DA numbers when you want to compare the strength of your site’s links to your competitors.

PA and DA numbers only work as a tool for search engine optimization.

A site with a high DA but a low PA may appear with good rankings in search results, but it can be relatively easily outperformed with search engine optimization.
