At their best your homepage is the company’s most important source of revenue. They attract over a thousand visitors per day without advertising from relevant keywords thanks to search engine optimization. The ”too few customers” problem turns into a ”too many customers” problem.
At their worst your homepage is basically a ”business card on the internet”. Has anyone ever sold anything with just a business card?
It is possible to get a free homepage and for a starting entrepreneur it is actually recommended.
The problem for a starting entrepreneur is that they don’t have established practices and may not even know exactly what they want from their website. The budget is small, so the content is made by themselves and this can take several months.
Tips for your first homepage
Anyone looking for free homepages must be prepared for a few compromises. For example, you may not be able to remove the service provider’s logo or editing may be limited. Often the appearance is also the same as thousands of others.
But what does it matter? The sites are free.
Below are a few examples where you can get free homepages
If you have a bit of money to put into building the site and are wondering where to find a reliable builder, I recommend using Google.
Google ”website for business” and request a quote from a few different companies.
I also build WordPress websites for a fixed price of 3450€, read more WordPress websites at Tapiokauranen.com.
In addition to the above, I recommend asking for advice in Facebook WordPress groups. Hundreds of experts monitor Facebook in the hope of exactly these kinds of posts, so prepare for at least 100 comments.
The main reason is that building the website itself is only a small fraction of the entire website project. Most builders offer the site from design to publication and user training.
For some, building basic websites can be a job of several hundred hours. For others, it is less than 10 hours.
Below is my own estimate of the prices and what they include
Websites under 1000€
1000-5000€ websites
5000-25 000€ websites
25 000€+
A good website is
The content of the pages needs to be immediately clear to the visitor when they arrive at the site. In my opinion, the homepage is a good place to write a maximum of 300 words about your website, yourself or your company.
In addition to the homepage, another excellent place is the contact page. People are much more likely to contact you when they know who they are dealing with.
Always try to think from the visitor’s perspective: what information would you want from the site yourself.
This section is extremely important if you ever want to generate results on your website. References say more than a thousand words.
At a minimum, add a list of your clients’ logos, but I strongly recommend taking it one step further.
The easiest way to collect references from clients is to include the right to use a reference directly in your offer. This way you don’t have to ask for a reference separately.
The easiest way to get client quotes is by offering assistance. Send your client an email like the following (note: do not use plural forms but keep the message personal):
Hi [client’s first name]
I’m doing a small survey on my clients’ satisfaction. Would you have a moment to answer the three questions below:
1. What did you think of the service
2. What would you improve in the service
3. Can your answer be used as a reference on our website?– Best regards: Tapio Kauranen

The message above works incredibly well. You will get much better responses than by generally asking “could we put a quote from you on our website?”.
Even the world’s best sales pitch is not as effective as recommendations from others.
Note: references don’t work if they are not personal. The psychology behind a reference is that your client has personally agreed to give you a reference.
One incredibly effective way to generate sales through your website is video references. Here’s an example below
For a small business, it’s enough to develop a color scheme, font, and logo for your company.
Larger companies usually even define a ”tone of voice”, i.e. the way of speaking that is used in all publications and customer service.
Your brand is what sets you apart from others. One of the most effective ways to stand out is to tie your company’s brand to its personnel
Unknown visitors, i.e. potential customers, usually arrive from search engines directly to the content that interests them. They probably won’t even visit your homepage.
So don’t invest too much in the homepage.
A good homepage includes for example
These are the pages that do the selling, not your homepage.
Think about what the visitor is looking for when they land on a content page. Try to answer the visitor’s search as effectively as possible.
A good content page includes, for example
Even if you don’t use social media yourself or never share links on social media, trust me: others will share.
Sharing links mainly help mobile users. They mean the visitor doesn’t have to separately copy the link on a touchscreen and take it to their social media.
A good way to add social links is to use this tool https://sharingbuttons.io/. It directly generates the HTML code for the services you want, so you don’t need any third-party tools.
Why?
Because Google scans your site and associates your website with a specific location. This way you start appearing better in local searches.
Example: You sell horse trailers all over Finland. Your warehouse is in Tampere.
When you add your address to the bottom of the page, you’ll notice that your visibility in the ”Horse trailers Tampere” search rises considerably and you get more local customers.
Another good addition is a phone number. If you ever want to add your business to Google’s My Business tool, verifying your business with Google becomes easier because Google’s robot can call you directly and doesn’t need to send a postcard to the address, which can take several weeks.
I have access to the Google Analytics visitor tracking of over 100 of my clients and based on that data I can state that, regardless of industry, over 70% of visitors browse the website on a mobile device.
According to Google, 60% of all 5.6 billion daily searches are made on a mobile device.
There has actually been research done on this. Typically people
Even though the majority of contacts might come via desktop, you cannot ignore mobile. It is an important part of the customer’s purchase decision.
In addition to customer satisfaction, mobile-friendly pages also improve your search engine visibility. You can use Google’s own test to make sure Google has nothing to complain about regarding your pages https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly
Very often websites make contacting way too difficult.
Take the following actions
Add a ”call to action” i.e. a prompt to contact on every page
Do not ask for unnecessary information in the form that you do not need. If the deal is closed in person or with an offer anyway, for a contact you only need a phone number or an email address.
I have even intentionally left out asking for a name in my own forms, because for most people the email is in the format firstname.lastname@company.fi
A secure connection, also known as SSL or HTTPS, means that traffic to your website is protected.
A secure connection is already a standard today, which is why search engines penalize a site with lower visibility if it still uses an unprotected HTTP connection.
If “Not secure” appears next to your website address, it means that a secure connection has not been installed. In this case, you can contact me and I will help you install a secure connection.
